Abstract:With the rapid socio-economic development in China, the requisition to reconstruct the urban space, including the residential space, is drastically discussed in big cities. Urban residential differentiation lies in one of the most direct embodiments of the social division. Based on the investigation in recent three years, this paper takes the main city of Nanjing as the study area, and the urban demolition for reconstruction as a unique research perspective. Through Arc GIS, SPSS, and other means of data analysis methods, this paper analyzes in detail the giant database of the fundamental information of each demolition sites, and summarizes four characters of the demolition sites as follows: 1)the dimensions and intensity of the demolition sites differ from each other significantly; 2)the mode of demolition in the downtown appears as concentrated dots, while that in the north and south parts dominate by mass-acreage regions; 3) the intending usage of these sites differs according to their locations; 4)usage of the demolition regions highly correlates with their level and location. To deeply investigate the correlation between the urban demolition for reconstruction in the main city and the residential differentiation, some elementary conclusions are drawn from above. The paper holds that most of the buildings in the demolition are low in residential quality and there is little possibility that the aboriginal residents could move back due to the lower compensations from the demolition. Besides, the demolition sites and low-price economy housing complement each other in special distribution. Accordingly, the differentiation model of the main city of Nanjing is summarized. The article maintains that the currently living space of Nanjing City has been a diversification of the structure of the embryonic structure of living space "layers" and "fan" of the hybrid model, from a single center to the trend of multi-center.
